2016 Mondeiche Spatlese Riesling, dry, 11.5% vol., Motzenbacker, ORGANIC
DE - ORGANIC - 022 Wild-fermented Riesling Spatlese from the Motzenbacker winery by Marie Menger-Krug. Moonwood is processed wood harvested according to a specific lunar cycle. During the first new moon phase of the new year, slow-growing oak trees, cultivated on barren soils, are felled as moonwood. At this lunar phase, the earth`s sap withdraws from the plants and trees towards the ground. The pores of the trees are very narrow, resulting in moonwood exhibiting exceptional strength. Historically, fire-resistant cookware and the supporting beams of houses have been made from moonwood. Robust, fire-resistant, yet delicate to work with. The magical sound of the Stradivarius violin is born in moonwood. Matured in moon oak barrels. For Motzenbacker, four moon oak barrels were felled in the Swabian Alps after the first full moon of 2004. The trees themselves determined the barrel size (between 1530L and 3460L). After the cooper`s initial skepticism, which transformed into enthusiasm for moonwood after the first steps of barrel making, the first wine was placed in the barrels in 2007. These wines were placed as must in moonwood barrels, fermented, and left to rest on their lees for six months. At the sensorially perfect moment, the wines were filtered and bottled. The result is astonishing. The moonwood oak barrel by no means dominates the wine-rather, it gently supports it, cradling it in a cradle. The wines impress with their clear aromatic profile, supported by delicate vanilla and floral notes, and are underpinned by an exceptional structure. Wines with length and character.
