Ducktail mussels - Percebes de Galicia, Jelo, Los Peperetes
From the Los Peperetes manufactory in Galicia come top-quality preserved seafood. Owners Jesus Lorenzo and his wife Dona Paz originally began preserving these little delicacies in their popular restaurant, Los Peperetes. The goose barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes) is not a mussel but a crustacean from the class of barnacles. Only the stalk of the goose barnacle is edible and is considered a delicacy in Spain and Portugal. The dark skin should also be removed. There, they are known as percebes. Goose barnacles are generally steamed in their shells on top of vegetables or in a wine sauce and served hot. The taste is similar to crab meat.
