These blue-black globose, pea-sized berries are botanically the small cones of the juniper shrub. Due to the content of resin and essential oils, they have a typical needlewood smell. Its spicy, sweet-bitter taste is particularly appreciated in the kitchen for sauerkraut, for seasoning game dishes, wild ragouts and sauces, hunter soups, braised meat, pies and marinades.
