This salt specialty from India is more aromatic spice than salt. In Hindi Kala Namak Black salt, rock salt which initially differs from the white halites means. However Kala Namak is more brownish-red to pink. In addition to the coloring iron, magnesium, and it contains a low concentration of hydrogen sulfide which constitutes the typical sulfurous odor. In Indian cuisine Kala Namak is not used for actual salts, but for mineralizing and especially for flavoring. The spiciness and flavor of this salt are well suited to exotic fruits, chutneys, vegetables and fish. Kala Namak is the traditional topping on Raitas, with yogurt, cucumbers and tomatoes.
