Rue comes from the plant Ruta chalepensis, which is cultivated in tropical Africa, particularly in Ethiopia, where it is used as a medicinal plant. Kuti, an infusion made from coffee leaves, is traditionally flavored with fresh Ruta chalepensis leaves. Some local cheeses are made with these leaves to enhance the flavor of the milk. The berries are used in the famous Ethiopian spice blend berbere.
