Rue comes from the plant Ruta chalepensis, which is cultivated in tropical Africa, particularly in Ethiopia, where it is used medicinally. Kuti, an infusion of coffee leaves, is traditionally flavored with fresh Ruta chalepensis leaves. Some local cheeses are made with these leaves to add flavor to the milk. The berries are used in the famous Ethiopian spice blend Berbere.
