Angostura Bitter, bitter liqueur, 48% vol., Riemerschmid
Angostura bitters, also known as Angostura bitters, is a bitter liqueur that may contain gentian root, bitter orange, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and cinchona bark. This bitter liqueur is used to flavor desserts, sauces for fish and meat, to flavor gin, vodka, and genever, and to make mixed drinks (such as the Manhattan). Angostura typically contains at least 44% alcohol by volume; however, it was not banned in the United States during Prohibition (1920-1933) because its bitterness meant it could only be used for flavoring.
