    We are a family business on the island Gossen in the northwest of Norway. Our goal is to revive and reinterpret Norway`s century-old production of one of the world`s most important minerals - Sea Salt. Building on traditions from the Viking Age, North Sea Salt Works produces sea salt of the highest purity and outstanding taste using 100% renewable energy and sustainable production processes. Our unique brand of sea salt flakes - HAVSNØ is derived from the cool, pure seawater of Saltsteinsleia in the Norwegian Sea. The mineral content of the cool and pure sea water makes the crystalline, white flakes of Havsnø smooth and soft with a slightly crispy consistency. The salt has a strong salty, but pure taste, without being bitter - this is due to the natural trace elements.

    Sea salt flakes

    Flake salt is often referred to as finishing salt, a name that refers directly to its most common use. Finishing is the salting of food immediately after cooking and before serving.
    Fine sea salt crystals are sprinkled on the food to accentuate and intensify their taste. We are very proud that some of the best chefs in the world use our flaked salt Havsnø at their Mise en Place.

    Salt is part of our story.

    The sea salt tradition dates back to Viking times, its significance far beyond the enhancement of taste: it served to preserve food, which was a necessity for survival during the long, cold and dark winters of the north. Many people around the world get to know Norway through our seafood. Since the Middle Ages, we have exported cod from the abundant North Sea in large quantities. For transport on ships, the fish was preserved by drying and salting. Many fish have been delivered to Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, where Norwegian cod is an integral part of many traditional dishes. Since it was cheaper to produce salt in the southern latitudes, it was transported home on the ships and the Norwegian sea salt production slowly disappeared at the beginning of the last century. North Sea Salt Works uses abundant, clean water power to revitalize sea salt extraction from the stormy, cool and pure northern seas. This sea salt has a distinct, strong flavor and we hope it suits you.
