  • PHILOSOPHY of Ernst Loosen

    Winery in the Mosel region

A great wine produced in the head

to enjoy a great wine, is a unique pleasure. In its variety of flavors reflects an entire cosmos, from the changing of the seasons on the unique terroir of a vineyard through to the passion of the winemaker. All major wineries, whom I have met, have a clear vision. They know how their wines to taste before the first grape is read at all. They always leave individual terroir triumph over technology. And quality - perfectly ripened grapes - always comes before quantity. Great wines owe to great passion and dedication to clear beliefs that are realized without compromise.

We feel these principles forward to our two wineries Dr. Loosen Mosel and at the JL Wolf committed in the Pfalz. We want to produce wines that seduce for enjoyment, which are concentrated and complex and reflect unmistakable way their origin.

When I drink a wine from our First Great location Wehlen Sundial, then I want to smell the blue slate, which has nurtured the grapes and taste the fruit, which is connected to this unique terroir. I want to experience the special character of the vintage. This is special, what wine is different from any other beverage.

Every great wine comes from the head. But its true greatness he proves only in your glass. I hope you drink our wine with the same joy with which I create it.

  • The quality factors

    The microclimate
The south-facing steep slopes and their proximity to the Moselle create a perfect microclimate for our Riesling. The southern slope guarantees sunlight from morning to evening; The steep slope allows the ground to be ideally warmed with little shadow. In addition, the Moselle reflects the sun`s rays into the vineyard during the day, while at night it releases the stored heat, thus ensuring a balanced microclimate. A long growing season allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their refreshing acidity.

    The slate floor
The stony slate soil visible on the surface of the vineyard reflects sunlight to the grapes during the day while retaining much of the heat. This is slowly released to the lower layers of the soil, creating a very balanced heat balance for the vines even on cooler nights. The slate is very rich in potassium and is therefore a rich, natural source of minerals. It gives Moselriesling its unmistakable mineral and lively character.
